Project 3- Concept & Mood

What appeals so much about the hair shop scene in The Gift of the Magi is the complete desperation for Della to find a gift she deems worthy enough for Jim. Because she has to give up her most prized possession I imagine the scene to have the emotion of being intimidating.

Adjectives to describe the scene would be: Desperate, cold, grim, intimidating

colors I imagine would be cool grays, whites, and dark wood colors with little color in them, a splash of red to indicate not danger, but a rather uncomfortable color shift. Initially I was thinking of using sharp shapes to express her sorrows but I feel I could include round shapes to help push the roundness of Mme. Sofronie.

  1. Thoughtful comments! Indeed, the hairdresser's shop is a place of mixed feelings, somewhat like a tiny version of the Faustian trade, where Della trades one of her dearest possessions, her hair, which her husband loves, for the money to buy him a gift. The place can be intimidating and mysterious and your color scheme seems to support that! Go on! Sounds promising!
